Paran Christian Ministries Durban

Paran Christian Ministries reaches out to refugees in Durban, led by Pastor Eldephonse Karagire. When refugees arrive in South Africa, life is extremely tough. They are not able to find employment, open a bank account or receive proper health care because of the stigma, status and lack of documentation of refugees. Some are forced to become involved in criminal activities, for example prostitution for women and young girls, just so they can survive.

Paran’s microfinance training and being part of a group empowers them to take a different path. In their microfinance group, they save and access loans so they can set up small businesses and earn a sustainable living. The microfinance system is an effective way to save and keep money safe because refugees can’t open a bank account.

"I am so grateful to E3 for giving me back my life. I lost all my money and E3 funded me to start my business afresh."

Hidaya, a refugee from Rwanda, is part of Paran's microfinance programme. She has on several occasions been a victim of xenophobic attacks, which harmed her small business.

E3’s partnership:

  • Funds 6 microfinance groups. Needy refugee families access loans and training to set up small businesses, including street stalls, grocery shops, sewing, baking and even fixing boats! Some people study at university thanks to the money generated from their businesses.

  • Launched a “Youth Financial Literacy Programme” to teach young people about saving and sensible spending.

  • Supports 50 refugee and other vulnerable children through Back to School.

  • Raises awareness about sexual and gender-based violence and cultural change through community workshops.

  • Started an Uber Eats motorbike business through which delivery riders earn a living and have the opportunity to buy the motorbike for themselves over time. One of the riders is Emmanuel, who supports a family of 10.

  • Grant from E3: £5,000.

  • Sustainability loan of £4,000 in 2020 bought a second Uber vehicle and has been repaid in full so now all profits are helping fund the ministry. Paran Durban received a second sustainability loan in 2022.

"My business is booming. I refurbish second hand beds and sofas and sell them on. Being part of a microfinance group means I can earn a living."
